This time each year the US is take in with March Madness, that is when the NCAA Men’s Basketball League conducts their championship tournament. It consists up of the top 64 teams chosen by the NCAA Selection Committee. Every year there are 1 or 2 play-in games to assist in deciding the field of 64, and play started on March 15. The tournament is run ?one and done? Style, so there are no second possibilities, and every year there are some giant collapses by heavily favored groups , as well as monumental long shot wins.
The number 1 (top) seed plays the number 16 best team in each of four regions, number 2 plays number 15, and such like. Each division plays down to one team, which then joins the 3 winners from the other divisions in the famous Final 4 competition. A 16 seed hasn't beaten a number 1 seed, but this year, there have been masses of other huge upsets. Just as there has been in past times and that?s what makes the tourney so special and fun. Nobody is safe from elimination and a classic upset is always only 40 minutes away.
In the South division not even the Vegas Odds makers saw 15 seed Lehigh dominating the heavily favored number 2 seeded Duke Blue Devils in the first round and finished with a five point win, in what was easily one of the biggest upsets of the last couple of years in college basketball. In that same division, Virginia Commonwealth University carried a 12 seed, and was a heavy long shot to the number 5 seeded Wichita State, but held on for a three-point win. In the Midwest division, number 12 seed South Florida conquered the number 5 seeded Church Owls in another big upset. And number 13 Ohio defeated number 4 seed Michigan and number 12 South Florida, and is positioned to take on number 1 seed UNC in the Sweet 16 in what is certainly one of the biggest games in that school’s basketball history.
In another giant upset in the West division, nobody gave little-known Norfork State much of a chance as the 15 seed facing number 2 seeded Missouri. However , Norfork State snuck out a two-point win, ultimately bowing out of the contest to number 7 seed Florida in a blowout. Number 1 seeds Kentucky, Michigan State, UNC and Syracuse have all rolled right along, and still stand as tournament faves to make it to the Final 4 that kicks off March 31.
But with so many upsets early on, will that give the leftover underdogs the right motivation they need to knock out one of the top contenders and claim their spot among the vaunted Final 4? As we have already seen this year, absolutely zip is totally sure. So power up your big screen, cheer for the fave or long shot that you suspect will go all the way, and get prepared for what guarantees to be an exciting end to this year’s March Craziness. And think it?s only 11 months before we are able to enjoy it again.
